Altar area of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Ascension in Newark, NJ Item Info

Date Created or Published:
1948
Item type:
Image
Description:
Photograph is undated, but likely from 1948 It may be jarring to see an Orthodox church with no [iconostasis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iconostasis) and with extremely Western-looking paintings (one hesitates to call them "icons", as they are completely outside of the tradition of Eastern Christian iconography). However, this was not uncommon in the United States prior to World War II in both Ukrainian Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches.
