Biographical / Historical
Andrew Krochmalny (Андрій Крохмальний; Andrii Krokhmal'nyi) was a first wave Ukrainian immigrant to the United States. He was born on September 1894 in the village of Velykyi Poliukhiv, Austria-Hungary (now L'viv oblast', Ukraine). He emigrated to the United States in 1913, enlisted in the Unites States Army in 1920. His wife Michalina Kutnyi (Kutnyj; Михаліна Кутна; Mykhalina Kutna) was born on September 22, 1911, also in Velykyi Poliukhiv. They were married when Andrew returned to his native village after being discharged from the Army, and they arrived in the United States in 1929.
Scope and Contents
This collection consists primarily of an album which contained approximately 520 postcards and advertising cards assembled by Andrew Krochmalny from the 1910s to around 1930. It also contains Andrew Krochmalny's school grade cards, military discharge, letter indicating arrival in US; Michalina Kutna Krochmalny's passport, naturalization certificate, school grade card, baptism certificate, and letter from unknown relative in Ukraine; and 3 photographs of Andrew Krochmalny.

Processing Information
The postcards were mounted by the creator in an album using photo corners. The album in its original state was photographed, then disassembled by the processing archivist for preservation reasons. Some postcards are still affixed to the album pages because photo corners had been pasted on top of them. These are gradually being removed.

Postcard albumScope and ContentsThe postcards in this album contain an extremely wide range of imagery, including Ukrainian historical and cultural themes, militaria, art reproductions, and cards with religious and political themes. They include color lithograph postcards published in Germany and Sweden, and some extremely unusual cards with textile and embroidery. Some cards have been mailed, but most are unused. The advertising cards include those of the Ukrainian Bazaar at 170 E. 4th St. in New York City, which depict cross-stitch embroidery patterns. |
