Volodymyr Komaryns'kyi was a Ukrainian social and political activist and lawyer, and was involved in the early organization of the Plast scouting movement in Transcarpathia in the 1920s. The collection consists primarily of his memoirs of that time period.

Biographical / Historical

Volodymyr Komaryns'kyi was a Ukrainian social and political activist and lawyer. He was involved in the early activities of the Plast scouting organization in Transcarpathia.

Komaryns'kyi was born in the city of Sokal' (today L'viv oblast', Ukraine) in 1906. In 1920 he moved with his family to Khust. He attended the gymnasium in Berehove, where he also joined the local Plast troop. In 1922 he founded a Plast division ("stanytsia") in Khust.

He obtained a law degree from Charles University in Prague in 1928, served in the Czechoslovak army, and began legal practice. During Carpatho-Ukrainian autonomy in 1939, he was named Director of Radio Broadcasting and Propoganda and was elected to the Soim (legislature).

After the annexation of Carpatho-Ukraine by Hungary, he continued his legal practice in Bratislava. As a displaced person in Germany, he served as legal advisor to the Ukrainian Central Committee in their interactions with the International Refugee Organization (IRO).

After resettling in the United States in 1950, he taught law at the Ukrainian Technical Institute in New York City, and was involved in the Carpathian Alliance and other Ukrainian American organizations.

This collection consists primarily of Komaryns'kyi's memoirs related to the early history of the Plast scouting organization in Transcarpathia. It also includes several letters.
