Biographical / Historical

Dokia Humenna was a major Ukrainian writer of over 30 books of prose. She began her career in Soviet Ukraine, and continued it as a refugee in western Europe and New York City. She was born in the city of Zhashkiv (now Cherkasy oblast', Ukraine), and began to publish essays in the 1920s. During World War II she became a refugee, first in L'viv, then in Saltzburg, Austria. She resettled in New York City, where she was a prominent member of the vibrant Ukrainian American literary and cultural scene of the 1950s and '60s.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains a typewritten manuscript of Dokia Humenna's autobiography "Ispyt Pamiati" ("A Test of Memory") - later partially published as "Дар Евдотеї: Іспит Пам'яті" ("Gift of Eudothea"). The memoir covers the time period from her childhood through 1973.
