An advanced pysanka workshop, where participants will learn several bleach-free methods for returning a dyed egg to lighter shades or even white, and then progressing with darker dyes.

THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED

Date: Saturday, March 16, 2024

Time: 1:00 - 4:00 PM

Learn several bleach-free methods for returning a dyed egg to lighter shades or even white, and then progressing with darker dyes. Our focus will be on the dyeways that work for Ukrainian Flag-inspired pysanky.  The instructor will provide designs one week prior to the workshop.  Students wishing to try their own designs must email the instructor (education@ukrhec.org) at least one week before class to determine suitability for this workshop. All supplies provided in the workshop (with the choice of stylus to use: delrin, traditional or medium tip electric kistka).

During the period of Lent preceding Pascha, or Easter, Ukrainians write pysanky, or decorate eggs, using ancient symbols. From the deep past, these patterns were thought to imbue the egg with magical powers and ward away evil spirits, and they later took on Christian meanings. Join us at the Center to continue this age-old tradition as we get ready to welcome spring.

Advanced class (age 14+) and must have written at least 12 eggs prior to class.

Guest Instructor: Emily Robbins
Emily Robbins comes from a Ukrainian Orthodox clerical family on her mother’s side. She has practiced the art of pysanky since age 7, and has taught the craft since 1986 at many institutions including museums, universities, and churches in the United States. Born in Manhattan, she now resides on the Upper West Side and works as an editor.

Cost: $25. All materials included.

Donations are gratefully accepted.

Seating is limited to 10 participants per session, so register early!
