Pysanka Art: Ancient Symbols and Traditions in a Contemporary World

What exactly is a pysanka? Within the flow of the contemporary world, awareness and interest in Ukrainian Pysanky continues to increase. Yet at the same time, the written egg has changed dramatically from the traditional, regional Ukrainian folk pysanky, particularly in the diaspora. I have a fascination with traditional folk pysanky designs and particularly with the most ancient symbols stemming back to pre-Christian times and that of ancient Trypillia. Exploring some of these important ancient symbols, we will see their eventual incorporation into folk pysanky designs; a record of our history and an integral part of Ukrainian cultural identity.

Writing pysanky is a tradition that learned from my mother when I was about 4 years old. I am constantly returning for rejuvenation to the traditional Ukrainian folk pysanka designs as well as creating original designs, many based on Ukrainian themes. Invited by the Royal Canadian Mint to submit original designs for the annual commemoration of Ukrainian culture in Canada on a Pysanka shaped Coin, my design was selected for the Pure Gold Pysanka Coin, “Tree of Life” for 2020.  In 2023, I had the honor of having my design selected for the Pure Silver Pysanka Coin depicting Ancient Trypillia.
