Folk Arts @ UHEC: Haivky and Vesnianky - Ukrainian Spring Games, Songs and Traditions with Fr. Bohdan Hladio
One of the unique characteristics of the Ukrainian celebration of Pascha is the ancient round-dances (khorovody), songs, and games commonly called Haïvky, Hahilky, or Vesnianky. Almost a parallel to the Ukrainian tradition of Koliady and Shchedrivky in the winter festival cycle, these spring games and songs are a celebration of joy – the joy of the resurrection of our Lord, and the joy of the “resurrection” of nature in the Spring.
Fr. Bohdan will offer a historical overview of the development of the haïvky, and participants will be treated to videos and demonstrations of various types of round-dances, songs, and games. Those who are able to gather in a large room will be able to learn the steps and movements to some of these dances, and everyone will learn to sing several of the most popular of these songs.
Fr. Bohdan Hladio is a priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada who has been interested in Ukrainian dance and folklore since his youth. Before becoming a priest he was active as a Ukrainian dancer, choreographer, and musician, and has helped direct Ukrainian cultural program at Ukrainian Orthodox Teenage Conference for decades.
