Naming the Nameless: Discovering Repressed Relatives from Ukrainian Lands

During an era dating primarily from 1917 to 1953, peoples of all ethnicities who inhabited historic Ukrainian territory were the victims of state-sponsored repressions on a genocidal scale. Many families were shattered as a result and their history obscured. This presentation will briefly outline some of the major state-sponsored repressions during this period of time, including Soviet persecution (Repression of the Kulaks; the Holodomor; the Great Terror; deportations during and after World War II) and Nazi persecution (the Holocaust and the ostarbeiters/slave laborers). It will also introduce record sources to assist in determining the fate of one's oppressed ancestors and potentially to reestablish contact with descendants of relatives who may have survived those horrific times.
