Chestnut Mushroom Log Workshop (Folk Arts @ UHEC-In Person)

Learn to inoculate a log with chestnut mushroom spawn (Pholiota aurivella). All participants will go home with a log and instructions for growing and harvesting. Taught by Cathy Blumig

Learn the how-tos of growing your own mushrooms on logs during a fun, hands-on workshop to produce Chestnut  mushrooms (Pholiota aurivella). Participants will learn about log sourcing, selection, harvest and management, tree identification, how to use different inoculation tools, log labeling, how to manage inoculated logs for mushroom cultivation, and more! Participants get to take home one inoculated log and handouts describing mushroom cultivation on logs. 

Participants will be handling logs, drill tools, hot wax, and other tools. Bring your own eye protection and work gloves. Wear clothes and closed toe footwear that you don’t mind getting dirty or splashed with hot wax. Long hair should be tied back and avoid wearing dangling clothes and jewelry.  

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop will be held OUTSIDE. Dress appropriately.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Cathy Blumig owns and operates Wolgast Tree Farm & Apiary in Somerset, NJ with her husband, Len Wolgast, where they grow Christmas trees, raise honeybees and produce a variety of log-grown mushrooms. She serves on the Somerset County Board of Agriculture and has been cultivating log-grown mushrooms for over 30 years.
